Team Update Thursday

Hi everyone,

I heard from Carol Kimmons that she and John arrived safely in Chad. It is really hot there, over 100 degrees during the day and the 90s at night. She and John have to sleep outside under a mosquito net. She thanks everyone for their prayers.

Well, this is our last night in Uganda. I have mixed emotions about leaving. This life is so laid back and you can see Jesus everywhere. We went to Bugegala Falls, the water fall that I went down last year on the Nile, OHHHHHHHH! I can't believe I did it. We went to KingFisher today and had tilapia and chicken for lunch and then went for an hour boat ride down the Nile. We saw the "source" of the Nile and saw some beautiful birds and a rather large monitor lizard EEK!! on the shore. I am glad we were in a boat.

Please pray for us as we start our journey home tomorrow, we need them. It is going to be a LOOOONG trip home, the worst part of the trip. All of our lives have been changed and none of us will be the same ever again. See you on Saturday!!!!

To Gina, just talked to your mom, she said she can't wait to see you. I told her you would be here before she knew it. She just wants that plane to land!! Hey mom its Jess! Just talked to grandma .. she says she loves and misses you and that kiras fine that she's been eating like a pig but she can tell she misses you. Hope you have fun tomorrow at the falls and the nile, take lots of pictures! I'll make sure to drive your car to work on saturday. Love you can't wait til you get back!

last day of clinic

Well today was it we are finished with clinics I think we saw at least 1300 people. We had over 700 cards and with families we numbered them ABC and we had many families of 6-8 kids. I think we made a dent and i know we helped the ones we could and saved a few babies who would have died otherwise. I have an update on the little baby we sent to the hospital Monday i think the 3 month old boy who was close to death, he was doing much better. We found out he was HIV pos and had severe pneumonia but he is on the mend and doing well. Praise God. Pam has been working all week with a man who had a machete wound he started coming last Wed and came everyday for a recheck yesterday when he went to the tent for snack and fellowship he told the minister he was ready to ask Jesus onto his heart. What an ending to a fulll week. The people here are so polite and respectful. I will miss the children and the friends I have made but am ready to come home. Tommorrow we go to the falls then cruise down the nile. I look forward to seeing all my family I love and miss you all. Sheri

Proud is an understatement

Hi Gina, I've been blogging but for some reason they aren't showing up. Never done this before so I guess I messed it up some how. Shelly told me she would help me this time to make sure it goes through.

I just wanted to let you know how proud I am of you and the work that you and your team are doing. I know you have not only helped the people at GSF with their physical needs but, also with their spiritual and emotional needs. I'm sure you have touched the hearts of everyone you've come in contact with. I have enjoyed seeing the posted pictures and reading the comments of others so I can't wait to hear the first hand stories you will share. I think it would be hard to not want to bring some of your new found friends home with you. They all look sooooo cute. Thank you for sharing all the Blessings you have and may God watch over you and your team as you finish up your work and return home.

Hey to all...today was the last full day of clinic, have a half day tomorrow. We are all very exhausted, but our reward is much greater. Thursday will be our relaxing day, going to see the falls at Lake Victoria, then the boat ride down the Nile river! Time has passed very quickly, I cry every day at the conditions that these wonderful people have to live under and survive through, but I also smile and praise God every day that we are able to help these wonderful people of Uganda. It's so easy to make the children smile, they are all so appreciative!
Kim...I love you and thank you from the bottom of my heart for updating Mom. Please tell her I love her can't wait to see her and Kira. If I'm not too exhausted on sunday, I would love to come over for a cookout.
Jess....Love you and can't wait to give you a big hug. don't forget to drive my car to work on saturday, remember it has not been started in awhile, so let it warm up before taking off!! Please call Grandma if you haven't lately, I know she would love to hear your voice!

Gina-Just wanted to send you a quick note to say hello. It was so sad reading today about the 7 year old girl and how the children have to live over there. I talked to your mom on my way home, she's doing good. I know she's anxious to see you, I'm fixing to call and read her the 2 notes posted today. Hopefully you can both come over for a cookout when you get home. I can't believe its almost Friday! Your mom's probably counting the days but she seems happy you were able to make this trip since she said it was something you really wanted to do. We love you and take care...Love Kim

Well today was clinic day it rained all night so it was a little slow this morning. People trickled in slowly all day and we probably saw about 100. I saw a baby today that was 3months old and only wieghed about 10lbs. She looked like a newborn and was very sick probably hours from death. I told Caroline the GSF director she needed to go to the hospital and she said they didn't have a Dr today it was a holiday. Can you believe that. We sent her on and they admitted her with severe pneumonia and got her started on antibiotics and fluids. It was so sad. Pam and I made a housecall to the local village today. The family lived in a brick dwelling with a dirt floor and thatch roof. The dirt floor wasn't even either it had mounds abd dips. The Ja-Ja (grandma) was sick and needed meds but couldn't come to the clinic. When we got there about 10 kids ran up to the car waving and smiling. Inside however was a 7yr old girl lying naked on a hard bench and she probably only wiegh 14lbs. I cried. It broke my heart. We took her back to the orphange, cleaned her up, dressed her, fed her and she looked like another child. She was lying in a soft bed sleeping later that day. It's hard to believe that with all the wealth in the world children live like this. Thank God for GSF if they weren't here these children would never have a chance. God works miracles through them. Easter in Uganda

Hey guys,

we finally got some R&R this weekend. Saturday night they had a goat roast for us. They dressed in their African garb and showed us some of their African dances. They pulled us on the dance floor and put grass skirts on us and showed us some of their moves. A little girl named Martha attached herself to my hip all night. She was taking care of me. She saw my purse on the floor and said "Aunti Amy, (pronounced onti omi) your purse is getting dirty". Then she held it in her lap all night. She just smiles up into my face and weaves her hand in mine. I think I might pick her to be my sponsored child. She is 8 years old and is 1 month younger than Lydia. She is a twin so that might make it a little more challenging. I only took a few bites of my goat on a stick. (So I would not offend). It was rather tough meat. When I was going to throw it away another girl asked if I was done and could they have it. Of course I said yes. It's a real treat for them. This am (easter am) we had a sunrise service that John led. It was great. Then our team taught Sunday School to the children. Kay and I had the 6-8 year olds. We taught them Jesus Loves Me in sign language. We had our lunch feast at 2:30pm. I was starving. Everything runs on Ugandan time. The saying is Americans have all the watches but Ugandans have all the time.

yesterday during the day we went to Jinja and shopped. We also visited 3 children's hospitals, I think I have cried every day that I have been here. They pack like 20 kids per room. The families have to stay with the children.

Got to run so others can use the computer. Hard work starts again tomorrow am. I miss you all and look forward to seeing you again next week.

Sorry I missed your phone call again .. i don't know how i did it, i was eating in monterreys and i had the phone on me and i still managed not to hear it ring .. that new phone isn't very loud. Amazing Easter Sunday!!

How to explain my renewed appreciation for what this day means! We started Easter with a sunrise service. Oh is Africa beautiful in the morning outside our porch. We taught Sunday school for the youth kids then went to worship. Worship overwhelmed me and I started crying. The kids looked at me as if they had never seen anyone cry before and I actually had to leave the room for a moment. We sang some of the same praise and worship songs as we do in the States. Well it is time for bed and I am really tired. And YES I took a Nappy Nap this afternoon. Wes no I have not ridden an elephant yet nor will I get the opportunity. No elephants in this area but there are hyradx! Love to all my family and friends, Jyradx (will explain later!)

Happy Easter to all of our Friends

Happy Easter, HE IS RISEN!!! We started out this am with an Easter sunrise service. John Kimmons led the service and it was a beautfiful perspective on Easter. After our Easter sunrise service we went to teach sunday school to the children. Helen and I taught the 9-12 years old. They were so sweet. We read the Resurrection story and these children are so knowledgeable of the Bible. We talked about the scripture verses individually. Pastor Bill would be proud of them.

The service of praise and worship was the greatest. Susan I have a song that I need to bring back it is really uplifting. John and Carol left this am for Chad. Please pray for them, they will be traveling all day and and half the night.

Our group has really bonded and all of our lives will never be the same. Tish and Benjy, Thanks so much for sending back a message. I am so glad to hear that Missy and Thomas are ok. I did call Caryn several days ago but she was in class. Please have the girls to send messages on the blogs, I love to get messages. Caryn will you send a message to me, I would love to hear from you honey. Love MOM

Hey NC!! What an awesome sunrise service with John here at the guesthouse. Then on to sunday school and praise and worship with the very special folks and all the awesome children at GSF. Just wanted to say a very special Happy Easter to my Mom , to Jessica, and to Kim! Kim...please call Mom and tell her for me "happy easter" and that I look forward to being home!! Hope Kira is ok. Gina - I just spoke with your mom, she was so excited to hear from you, she said she talked to Jessica and she hated she missed your call. I just read the 2 blogs about going to the market today, sounds very interesting, can't wait to hear all about it. It sounds like your having lots of adventures to tell us about. Hope you like "goat". We're warming up here a little, maybe it won't be so cold when you get home. I can't get your mom to come over to spend the night, she said she likes being in her own bed at night. I'll be checking to see if you write us so I can call and tell your mom. I wondered if this week has gone by fast for you? We all love you and take care, I am praying for your daily that you will touch the childrens hearts in Africa. Ugandan Market

Some of us went to the Ugandan market on the way home. Kay, Cheryl, Pam and Fred. We rode with Mark in the jeep and went to the market which was at least 3 city blocks long. It was very muddy since we had an afternoon monsoon. There were people EVERYWHERE!!! The market was a grocery store, home depot, Walmart, Belks (Ha Ha) with men, women and children's clothes. We almost stepped on a dead rat which was very well nourished I might add. We looked all over to get some jack fruit and finally found some. This fruit is very good and has a taste between a mango and pineapple. We passed a 14 passenger van (taxi) with live chickens tied to the top. (We found out that chickens can only be transported alive and not dead), so they were clucking. We passed a man on the side walk that had just killed a chicken. He was pulling the insides out and it was quite YUCKY!! The man laughed at me when I walked by since I guess he thought he would gross me out, thank God, Carol Kimmons was not with us. She would have just died right there. On the way to Jinja, we saw an alligator in the river and could not take a picture because we were on the bridge and you can be arrested if you take a picture on the bridge due to the fact the Ugandans are "terror" conscious.
Well, we are off to the goat roast and are loading up with Deet, Yuck, but believe me it is better than malaria.

Saturday

Today we went into Jinja to go shopping and have lunch. It's like going to Myrtle beach only the shops are very old and in bad shape of disrepair. We ate lunch at a place called Ozzies it's run by an australian lady. We ordered our food at 1pm and I was the last to be served and got mine at 3pm. I will never complain about the wait in the USA again. It rained very hard while we were there and the streets were like rivers. We also visited the catholic hospital, the Jinja hospital and the children's hospital. They have very tiny rooms with 20 small beds pack into them. The lab had a couple microscopes and sterilizers and that was about it. There were people just lounging around in the yards as when the baby goes to the hospital the mom has to bring all the other children with her. It was very sad. There was some moms who just had babies 1 had twins very cute, her mom was there helping her. Another woman had a newborn that probably only wiehged 3-4 lbs in the crib next to her bed. It was very primitive compared to what we have in USA. Tonight we are having a bonfire and "goat" roast and the children are going to dance for us. It should be fun. I hope everyone has a great Easter!

Hey Kim and Jess....thank you Kim so much for keeping up with Mom each day, just reading your note helps me to feel so much better! Tell Mom and Kira hey and I love them and miss them. We stay so busy here that the time is going so fast. The beautiful children of Uganda touch my heart in such a huge way. There will be many things to tell you all when we get home, trying to get ready to go to the Missionaries house for supper, so love you all very much and please keep praying for our team's strength! Going shopping tomorrow in Jinja and hope to take more pictures. We have all been relying on Fred to take pictures during clinic time. I love you Jessica and can't wait to see you! Second Clinic day

We finished a second clinic day today. We saw a lot of patients, the village today that came were healthier than the village we saw yesterday. We sent two people to the hospital today. One man was a diabetic with a very high blood sugar who needed his medication. We also sent a lady who probably has breast cancer and she is young. We found out that she will have surgery on Tuesday for the mass. She is sad, and we have prayed for her and thought so much about her. We sent three people to the hospital yesterday. Two children with very high fevers and dehydration. One lady had rabies yesterday and she was the third person we sent to the hospital. We thought she may lose three fingers but we found out today that she was not going to lose her fingers. The rabies vaccine was being delivered to the hospital yesterday at the same time we took the patient. God is so on time. Everything is working out and he is so AWESOME!!
On this Maudy Thursday, we remember what Christ went through for us. We will be thinking and praying about CCC's service.

Hello cuz!! Sounds like your having the experience of a lifetime. I have talked to your mom everyday, sometimes more, she's doing great and so is Kiera! I read her everything that is written. I just heard Jess didn't know it was you and missed your call. Your mom said to tell you hello and she loves you. I just can't wait to hear your stories and see the pictures. I'll call her when I get home and read her everything thats posted today. I'm going to get Ron's email and send him the site, he wants to write you. He said to tell you he loves you and sorry he got the weeks mixed up, he called the other night to tell you to have a good trip. Hey Jess...miss you terribly. Please try again to call grandma and make sure she is doing ok. You know that she is always up late, so maybe try to call her tonite after you get off of work!! Just another normal Thursday

Wow today was our second day of clinic. Me with my numerous medical skills have really come in handy! Actually I have been counting pills for the pharmacy in my lull periods. I am working registration and have an intrepretor, Acrum. Acrum is 13, and we are becoming wonderful friends. It is breaking my heart the number of kids who are coming in without parents who have walked miles. Yesterday there was a 7 yr old boy who carried his 4 yr old sister on his back. We have to make one of the siblings go back and get a parent or relative in order for us to be able to treat them.

I am having the time of my life as I knew I would. I am so thankful I followed God's will. I have thouroughly enjoyed my notes of encouragement, I am opening them one each day. Peace out from Africa!

Thursday

Well today was the second day and we did much better than yesterday. Yesterday was over whelming and I was phisically, emotionally and spiritually wasted. The people were so poor and sick we sent 4 people to the hospital. So many sad cases. I questioned if God could even see these hurting people. Today was better this village was a little wealthier and not as sick. Also we were more organized. Only 2 people went to the hospital. The children at the orphanage are wonderful. SO happy and helpful. The highlight of my day is walking to the clinic in the m orning and getting high fives from the 3-5 yr olds. They swarm us and want to hug us and hold are hands they are so precious. Tommorrow is last clinic day this week then some time off to refresh and relax. I hope everyone has a wonderful Easter wish I could be there to hunt eggs and eat ham love to all Sheri

We're Praying!

Greetings to you, all our brothers and sisters in Uganda!

It is a thrill to be able to see the children, taste the food, and hear the sounds all through your posts. We are praying! We are lifting each of you up to our gracious Lord, who went before you and is present with you now!
Your weather sounds wonderful...last night we had a 28 degree low! BBbrrrrrr...come on Spring! And yes, watching the Heel's take the championship was great!

Hope you all are taking lots of photos and journaling each day. I am sure each day is overflowing with experiences to capture and process for many years to come. Give out some hugs from me! ellie

Prep Day

Hello all, We prepped today for clinic tomorrow and discovered we are missing a travel pack, BUMMER!!! We hope to find out soon about what happened. We are having chicken stew, chappati, pineapple, rice and muffins for dinner, YUMMM we have been smelling the stew all day. Tomorrow is a big day as we first begin our clinic. We have put all the stations in the chapel and will probably see at least 200 people tomorrow. We are all eagerly awaiting to be God's hands and feet.

Tuesday in Uganda from the Kimmons

We are here safe and sound and glad to have the travel part behind us. Very comfortable climate so far, some thunderstorms in the evening. Had a tour of GSF this orning and met many of the children, what a blessing. I have pictures and wish I could post them here. Just finished a lunch of posho and beans, a traditional meal much like our grits and pinto beans.

Now we are getting designated for our jobs, and Kay Drew and I will be in Station One of the Clinic, teaching personal hygiene and dental care. John will be in the Evangelism Tent just before the patients get to the pharmacy for their medications. It's been a real blessing already to meet the missionaries and staff, and hear the stories of the children and how they came to be living at Good Shepherds Fold. Many break your heart. But everyone bears a huge smile. We have already learned much about happiness amidst poverty.

We are more dependant on your prayers than we thought. Many interferences from the enemy, so please hold us up.

Many are sharing this computer so we will try to update again but will be taking turns, and the computer is quite slow. We heard great news from the States that UNC won the NCAA and so three cheers for the Heels!!!

It's already Tuesday?

Well I am so glad to be writing this note to all my family and friends who have supported and helped me live out one of my life dreams. Ok so besides the long plane rides and no sleep, things are awesome. We were greeted yesterday by all the children as we came into Good Shepard's Fold with music and singing. It took me a minute or two before I could get off the bus because I was overwhelmed with emotion. The scenery out our porch is breathtaking. We have also seen some beautiful birds and monkeys from afar. Oh and there ARE snakes here, but we "should not" expect to see one. Today TUES so far we have taken a tour of GSF where we were able to meet a ton of the kids. Veronica a 1 yr old AIDs patient was so sweet. We have so many pictures that I can not wait to share. Well it is time for lunch. Afterwards we are sorting medical supplies and setting up the clinic. We will open tomorrow for patients. More later. Hugs and kisses from afar.

Tuesday in Uganda

Hello to all we are doing well so far. Got here about 4pm yest evening and wow what a greeting. It was amazing. I was amazed by the crowds in Entabbee. People everywhere and traffic well let me just say that even a native new yorker would have an extreme difficulty driving there. Taxis , which are van, with 15 people in them weaving in and out and constant honking of horns. The people live in homes that would be condemmed in the states. It just made me realize how spoiled we are. We begin setting up the clinic this AM and start seeing villagers tommorrow. It's an amzing place and there is so much need. Keep praying for continued success. Love to all my family and friends.

To Jess, Kim and all others....we had the MOST awesome welcome when we drove up to the orphanage, ALL of the kids were waiting for us at the gate and singing and dancing.....I don't think I've ever had such an awesome greeting in my entire life. Taking pictures!! All I can say right now is....WOW!! Please pray for our continued strength and ability to serve these wonderful people in Uganda to the best of our ability. Miss you all!!

Praise GOD

We arrived at GSF this afternoon and all of the children and staff were waiting for us. We just had a wonderful dinner and started dividing our medical stuff. We stayed in Entebbe last night where most of us slept ok, we met a jet black cat named Obama. He was rotten. The mosquitoes are plentiful, we have not seen any Geikos yet, but I am sure they will come out when we go to bed. We are so thankful for all the prayer that everyone has bathed us in. We are still having small difficulties and Satan is trying but is not successful.

We have had our devotions and prayed a lot. We really appreciate you all and KEEP PRAYING!!!

Just Spoke to Amy

I just got a call from Amy and she said they have just arrived at the village. They spent the night in Entebbe yesterday. The connection was pretty bad and hard to follow but I did hear her say that they got pulled on the way to the village but she had to hang up suddenly before I found out what happened after that. I did understand, though, the part where she said how upset she was that she broke her camera to pieces! Carol Kimmons broke her perscription glasses for good measure as well. Anyway, it sounds like it's a bit rough at the moment. They might get to send some emails in a little while.

They have arrived in Uganada

This is dale, my wife Sheri just called and everyone got to Uganda without any issues. The cell phone she was using was just about dead, and everyone one in the group wanted to call home. So the conversation was really brief. But..she got there fine!!!!!

Day before!!!

Well, I finally figured this out! I am so excited about leaving tomorrow. I have high hopes for what Christ is going to do through us. We are going to be a great team. I have some daily devotions for all of you that I want to give you in the morning so we can start as we go to the airport.

Whew it's all in there!

Praise the Lord all my stuff fit into my carry on and backpack. I am so excited with only 3 days to go. I am very excited to see how God will work in and thru us in the coming weeks. Pray for safe travels, healthy bodies, open minds and community within our team. I can not wait to be the hands and feet of Christ to the people of Uganda. Jennifer
